Classroom Lessons

The following classroom lessons are intended to help educators integrate the propaganda materials featured in Where Monsters Are Born into their classrooms. Broken down into three categories — "Making Martyrs," "Mourning and Memory in Historical Context," and "Youthful Rebellion" — the lesson plans include potential framings, discussion questions, and links to additional resources for in-class discussions.

Lesson 1: “Making Martyrs”

Objective: To identify the way in which the Italian Far Right’s dead are constructed as “martyrs,” and to understand the various implications of this particular framing.

Analytical Skill: Visual/Textual Analysis

Lesson 2: “Mourning and Memory in Historical Context”

Objective: To compare and contrast the collective memory strategies surrounding war dead and fallen “comrades” of Fascist Italy, Nazi Germany, and the contemporary Far Right.

Analytical Skill: Comparing Sources

Lesson 3: “Youthful Rebellion”

Objective: To recognize the ways in which the contemporary Italian Far Right stokes a sense of youthful rebellion and its connection to rhetorical and physical violence.
